The Most Underrated Health Habit

If I asked a room full of women what the most important health habit is, I’d probably hear a lot of the same answers.
Drink more water.
Eat more protein.
Exercise consistently.
Get more sleep.
Those are all good habits. They matter.
But after years as a nurse practitioner, years of pursuing my own health, and years of walking alongside other women, I’ve become convinced that the most underrated health habit isn’t found in the kitchen or the gym.
It’s found with an open Bible.
Not because reading your Bible burns calories or builds muscle.
But because it changes the heart that drives every other decision.
For years, I thought I needed a better plan. I started diets on Mondays, downloaded meal plans, bought workout programs, and promised myself, “This time I’ll stick with it.”
Sometimes I did.
Until life got busy.
Until I missed a workout.
Until I ate something I hadn’t planned.
Then I’d do what so many of us do.
I’d start over.
Again.
Looking back, I wasn’t just starting over with my habits—I was starting over because I was trying to control an outcome instead of surrendering it.
The biggest shift in my health journey didn’t happen because I found the perfect nutrition plan.
It happened when I stopped asking, “How do I lose weight?” and started asking, “Lord, how can I honor You with the body You’ve entrusted to me today?”
That one question changed everything.
Instead of chasing perfection, I began pursuing faithfulness.
Instead of trying to earn peace through a number on the scale, I found peace in surrender.
Instead of treating health as something that determined my worth, I began seeing it as one way I worshiped the One who gave me this body.
Does that mean I stopped caring about nutrition?
Not at all.
I still eat protein.
I still lift weights.
I still plan meals.
I still believe our bodies matter because they’re gifts from God.
But those habits are no longer my foundation.
They’re the fruit.
The foundation is meeting with the Lord.
Because when my heart is aligned with Him, I make better decisions—not because I’m trying harder, but because my desires begin to change.
I don’t need another Monday.
I don’t need another diet.
I don’t need another promise that this time will be different.
I need Christ.
Every single day.
Maybe the most underrated health habit isn’t another supplement, another workout, or another meal plan.
Maybe it’s opening your Bible before you open Instagram.
Maybe it’s surrendering your health before trying to control it.
Maybe it’s remembering that Jesus is a far better Savior than any diet will ever be.
A Question to Sit With This Week
Before you make your next health decision, ask yourself:
Have I surrendered this to the Lord, or am I still trying to carry it myself?
