The Best Health Advice I Never Got in Nursing School

I spent years learning about the body in nursing school, but there was one piece of health advice no professor ever taught me. Looking back, it changed the way I think about food, fitness, weight loss, and what it truly means to be healthy.

When I became a nurse practitioner, I thought I understood health.

I knew anatomy.
I knew physiology.
I knew lab values.
I knew medications.

I spent years learning how the body works and helping patients navigate everything from diabetes to high blood pressure to weight loss.

But despite all that education, there was one piece of health advice I never received.

And looking back, I think it would have changed everything.

I Learned How the Body Works

Nursing school taught me a lot.

I learned:

  • disease processes

  • medications

  • nutrition guidelines

  • exercise recommendations

  • health promotion

I learned how to identify problems.

I learned how to treat problems.

I learned how to educate patients.

But there was one question nobody ever asked:

What is health actually for?

Not how to improve it.

Not how to measure it.

Not how to manage it.

But why it matters in the first place.

The Missing Piece

The message I absorbed was the same message most women still hear today:

Health is about:

  • preventing disease

  • improving numbers

  • losing weight

  • looking better

  • living longer

Those things aren’t necessarily wrong.

But they’re incomplete.

Because if health is only about outcomes, you’ll spend your life chasing them.

And when the outcome isn’t happening fast enough, you’ll feel like a failure.

I know because I’ve been there.

The Best Health Advice I Never Got

The best health advice I never received in nursing school was this:

Your health is a stewardship issue before it’s a weight issue.

That single truth changed the way I think about food, exercise, and my body.

Instead of asking:

“How do I lose weight?”

I began asking:

“How do I faithfully care for what God has entrusted to me?”

That’s a completely different question.

And it leads to a completely different journey.

Stewardship Changes Everything

When health becomes stewardship:

You stop punishing your body.

You start caring for it.

You stop chasing perfection.

You start pursuing faithfulness.

You stop asking:
“Did I do this perfectly?”

And start asking:
“What is the next faithful step?”

Suddenly health becomes less about control and more about obedience.

Why So Many Women Feel Stuck

Most women don’t have an information problem.

They already know:

  • vegetables are healthy

  • movement matters

  • sleep is important

  • water helps

The struggle isn’t knowledge.

The struggle is trying to build healthy habits on a foundation of pressure, shame, and appearance.

That foundation eventually cracks.

Every time.

What I Teach Now

If I could go back and sit in a classroom full of future healthcare providers, I wouldn’t start with calories or meal plans.

I’d start here:

Your body is not your identity.

Your body is not your enemy.

Your body is not a project to obsess over.

Your body is a gift from God.

A vessel to steward.

A tool to serve.

A blessing to care for.

Health God’s Way

Health God’s way is simpler than the world makes it.

It isn’t:

  • obsession

  • extremes

  • constant starting over

It’s:

  • nourishment

  • movement

  • rest

  • stewardship

  • consistency

  • grace

And perhaps most importantly:

It’s surrender.

A Question to Sit With This Week

What if the answer isn’t another diet…

What if the answer is a different foundation?
